Human rights activist and executive director of People’s Watch Henry Tiphagne, who was also in Tuticorin on Tuesday, told TOI that there was total violation of human rights in the police firing. He alleged that the people who shot at people were not in police uniform and that no formal procedure was followed before the firing.

People’s Watch calls for the order of immediate closure of Sterlite Copper Smelter
Plant No. 1 and for the stoppage of construction at the Copper Smelter Plant No.2, by
the Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisamy. People’s Watch would like to highlight that
the Chief Minister’s inaction during the 100 day protest and his gross negligence
during the Tuticorin Sterlite Protest has resulted in the loss of over a dozen lives, left
several brutally injured and has caused extensive damage to property.

Condemning the decision to amend the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989, members of various Dalit outfits and organisations staged a demonstration here on Tuesday.

Led by P.P. Palanisamy, district secretary, Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front, members said that the Supreme Court had laid down stringent norms before registering a case under the SC/ST Act that was in place from 1989. They wanted both the Central government and the Supreme Court to annex the Act to the 9th Schedule of the Constitution.




 

 

As part of the National Resistance Day, called by various political parties and other organisations to protest against the recent Supreme Court judgement imposing conditions regarding implementation of Scheduled Castes / Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, a demonstration was organised demanding the safeguarding of the Act here on Tuesday.

People’s Watch denounces the speed and urgency of the actions initiated by the Vice Chancellor of the Madurai Kamaraj University, Mr. P.P. Chelladurai, against Prof. Nirmala Devi. People’s Watch further condemns Mr. P.P. Chelladurai’s announcement that a ‘committee’, led by a Senate member of the University, will conduct an enquiry into the allegations made against Prof. Nirmala Devi.

This is to bring to your attention that the Executive Director of People's Watch, Mr. Henri Tiphagne, will be addressing an event at the United Nations Headquarters in New York today. Mr. Tiphagne will be representing the International Dalit Solidarity Network (IDSN) at the event titled 'The Committee on NGOs - Improving working methods encouraging civil society engagement'. Mr. Tiphagne serves on the Executive Committee of the IDSN. This event has been scheduled on the 19th June from 7:30pm (IST) onwards.
