Madurai: People’s Watch, the human rights protection network, has demanded the release of Tibetan students and activists in Chennai who have been preventively detained ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit. The organization defended the right to hold a silent protest.

Condemning the action of the State police to detain Tibetan activists ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Mamallapuram in Kancheepuram district, People’s Watch, a Madurai-based NGO, has called for their immediate release.

Executive Director of People’s Watch Henri Tiphagne said Tibetans in India believed in non-violence and strongly adhered to it. They only engaged in creative means of protest to get their demands for ‘Free Tibet’ known to the world, especially during visits of Chinese dignitaries.
