Goondas Act against NGO founder condemned

Madurai: People’s Watch has condemned the district police and Madurai district administration for having detained founder of Russ Foundation, Berlin Jose, who was arrested under sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act on the charges of sexually abusing a 11-year-old girl child staying a home run by the foundation Berlin Jose, 54, and manager of the home V John Prabakar, 63, who were arrested a month ago, were detained under Goondas act three days ago. Madurai district collector issued detention orders based on a recommendation from Madurai district superintendent of police.

Executive director of People’s Watch, Henri Tiphagne said that detention order was issued only to prevent Berlin Jose from getting bail through the court. “The offences alleged against Berlin Jose are to be dealt legally and he has to face them in the court of law. But we strongly condemn detention under Goondas act. We believe that this act by the police is only to cover up their slow investigation in this case,” he said.
