A Madurai-based NGO’s fact-finding team on a recent incident involving the death of two Tamil Nadu labourers, who allegedly died after being taken in custody by the Andhra Pradesh forest officials, has said that, belonging to the scheduled tribal (ST) Malayalee community, they were part of several tribals from various villages of Sitheri Panchayat, Harur Taluk, Dharmapuri District, being taken to Andhra Pradesh on November 21, 2021 to work as wage workers.

A People’s Watch fact-finding team, which examined the recent death of two tribals from Sitheri in Dharmapuri in Andhra Pradesh, has urged the State government to form an inquiry committee into the issue.

Two tribals Raman and Balakrishnan had jumped from a van after being taken into custody by Proddatur Forest Department in Andhra Pradesh on November 25. The team urged the Tamil Nadu government to provide ₹ 10 lakh to their families as relief and a suitable government job to a family member.

ABOUT 50 poor labourers belonging to the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category from Tamil Nadu were allegedly lured into the forests in Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh in the last week of November by red sandalwood smugglers. Subsequently,  they were captured, illegally detained and tortured by the district Forest Department officials, resulting in the death of two labourers, a 64-page fact-finding report released by Tamil Nadu-based human rights organisation, People’s Watch, has alleged, on Monday.

Middlemen luring Sitheri tribals to cut red sanders in AP, says activist fact finding team led by Henri Tiphagne from People’s Watch, an NGO, observed that tribals of Sitheri hamlet in Dharmapuri were exploited by middle men, who engage them in red sanders smuggling in Andhra Pradesh

He demanded the state police to track down brokers who lure gullible workers from Tamil Nadu to chop red sanders in the neighbouring state.
