The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Wednesday sought a counter from the Thoothukudi Superintendent of Police Murali Rambha after
a public interest litigation petition alleged police clampdown against anti-Sterlite protesters.

The Madurai Bench of Madras High court criticized Thoothukudi police for initiating criminal action against persons involved in anti-Strelite activities, saying that the people department is taking sides.

case relating to the anti-Sterlite protest in May 2018 in which 13 people were killed in police firing.

Expressing disappointment over the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) decision in the Sterlite Copper case, in which the State’s decision to close the plant was set aside, People’s Watch, a Madurai-based Human Rights Organisation, has urged the State government to immediately take a policy decision in this regard.

The Madurai bench of the Madras high court has reserved orders on a petition seeking guidelines to deal with children of parents who are prisoners and children who are victim of violence. A division bench of justice S Vimala and justice T Krishnavalli had earlier directed an amicus curae to file a report on the issue and directed the report be sent to the additional director general of police, prisons and central prisons across the state for consideration.
