Access to Justice through Legal Services Authorities
People’s Watch is implementing a Department of Justice Government of India and UNDP supported 2 year (2010 - 2011) Project on Access to Justice to Marginalised People in 2 districts each of five states in the country - Gaya and East Champaran (Bihar); Simdega and Gumla (Jharkhand); Subarnapur (Sonepur) and Bolangir (Orissa); Jaipur and Ajmer (Rajasthan); and Allahabad and Sonbhadra (Uttar Pradesh). Through this project the Legal Services Authority at the district level and state level are being sensitized and made willing to take up human rights violation cases of the poor and the marginalized; legal community will be equipped to offer professional pro-bono services through the Legal Services Authority and the Legal Services Authority will assist the victims in pursuit of their cases before the State Human Rights Commissions. The victims of custodial violence & police torture, caste based atrocities and domestic violence are assisted to get justice with the help of the legal aid system, the judiciary, the law enforcement authorities, the National and State Human Rights Institutions etc.
